Roosevelt Island is a half-day trip from East 62nd Street, and the easiest way over is the aerial tram that boards at 59th Street and Second Avenue, about a ten-minute walk from us. From the tram station on the island you can walk the whole length in under an hour: south to Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park at the tip, or north to the old Blackwell lighthouse. It's flat, quiet, and has the best skyline views in the city that most visitors never see.

Most people who stay with us have never been to Roosevelt Island, and most of them end up glad they went. It's the thin strip of land in the East River between us and Queens, and the way over is half the fun: an aerial tram that climbs up over the river and drops you off in about four minutes. The whole island is walkable, flat, and quiet in a way Manhattan almost never is. You can do it in a morning or an afternoon and be back for dinner on this side.
