Where Is Sutton Place in Manhattan? East 53rd to 59th, Between First Avenue and the River
It's easy to miss on a map because it's tiny. Sutton Place is both a street and the name locals give the few blocks around it: First Avenue to the water, the East 50s up to 59th Street, with Sutton Place and Sutton Place South running north to south nearest the river.
Whether it counts as Midtown East or the Upper East Side depends on who you ask. Officially it sits south of 59th Street, so Midtown East. In practice it feels like neither, because it doesn't behave like either one: the cross streets dead-end at the East River, so there's no through traffic, no bus route and no reason for a cab to come down them. That's why it's quiet.
What's actually there: apartment buildings, some very old townhouses, two small pocket parks with benches facing the water, and the esplanade under the Queensboro Bridge. No attractions in the ticketed sense. People come to sit down and look at the river, which is a legitimate reason to walk somewhere in this city.
From us on East 62nd Street it's about ten minutes on foot: south on First or Second and then east into the 50s. The nearest subway is the 4, 5, 6, N, R and W at Lexington Avenue and 59th Street, a few blocks west. If you want the whole walk laid out, including where to go in and where the benches are, we've written both a Sutton Place guide and an East River walk from our door.
Worth knowing: the film people are thinking of when they hear the name is usually Woody Allen's Manhattan, and the bench shot under the bridge is right here. It looks the same.
