Central Park's fall color usually peaks from about the third week of October into early November, and the best of it is a short walk from the East 60s. Head in from the Fifth Avenue side and aim for the Pond at the southeast corner, the Mall's elm canopy, and the Ramble by the Lake. Go early on a weekday morning for the light and the quiet. From East 62nd Street the closest entrances put you at the Pond in about ten minutes.

Fall is the best the park looks all year, and we're on the right side of it. From East 62nd Street you're walking into the southeast corner of Central Park in about ten minutes, which is where a lot of the good color is. Peak usually lands in the last week or two of October and holds into early November, though it shifts a little every year with the weather. If you're here in that window, this is where I'd send you and when I'd go.
The honest tip: go early. A weekday morning gives you soft light, thin crowds, and the leaves before the afternoon tour groups arrive. Later in the day the southern half of the park fills up fast.
